La Cubana has been awarded the Serra d’Or Critics’ Award for the production L’amor venia amb taxi, which was performed at the Teatre Romea in Barcelona from September to February.
This recognition is especially meaningful to us, as the production directly reflects the world of amateur theatre in Catalonia, which is the very origin of La Cubana. It is a sincere tribute to all those companies that, with limited resources but great passion, have kept the spirit of theatre alive throughout the country.
The production takes as its starting point a play by Rafael Anglada, premiered in 1959 at the same Teatre Romea. Over the years, this work has been performed by almost every amateur theatre company in Catalonia.
Our version also sets the action in that same year, 1959, a challenging period for Catalan theatre. During the Franco regime, productions in Catalan were very limited and often restricted to light comedies staged at the Romea. Once published by Editorial Millà, these plays entered the amateur circuit, where they were rehearsed for months and often performed only once. In many cases, this was the only way audiences could experience theatre in Catalan.
Many thanks to the Serra d’Or critics and the institution for this recognition!
